This test paper is used for the qualitative determination of free halogens (chlorine, bromine, iodine). In the presence of these compounds the pale yellow paper turns blue. Free nitrous acid HNO2 (not nitrite ions) interferes, but can be destroyed by additions of amidosulphuric acid.
